BELGIUM. Belgian logistics company to build first private truck charging stations in Antwerp

Belgian logistics service provider Van Moer Logistics has announced plans to build the first privately managed smart charging stations for electric freight traffic in the Port of Antwerp. The project, estimated to cost €1.2 million, will begin construction in late 2024 and is expected to be operational by 2025.

The charging station, located at Van Moer’s site along Keetberglaan, will have two components:

public Access: six 400kW fast chargers will be available for public use,

private Use: thirty 50kW slow chargers will be reserved for overnight charging of Van Moer’s own trucks and terminal vehicles.

The energy for the chargers will be sourced from Van Moer’s on-site solar panels, battery technology, and green energy contracts. The company also plans to expand its solar panel capacity by 3.5 MWp in the near future.

To achieve this project, Van Moer Logistics has partnered with Belgian energy company Bnewable, which specialises in energy storage and optimisation for commercial and industrial clients. Bnewable will provide the battery technology and its smart control system, which will optimise energy flows and potentially generate additional income for Van Moer Logistics.

This project aligns with Van Moer Logistics’ sustainability strategy, which aims to reduce CO2 emissions in the transport department by 45% by 2030. The company plans to achieve this through a combination of intermodal transport, electrification, and the use of transition technologies such as HVO and dual-fuel hydrogen.

The project is partly supported by the Agency for Mobility and Public Works (Clean Power for Transport).
