PORTUGAL. The Portuguese company i-charging launches MCS solution

This solution from i-charging, called i-light, offers a total power of up to 1.5 MW. It also consists of a power unit and satellites, each with a charging point. What other features does it offer?

At the IAA Transportation fair, held in Hanover, the Portuguese charging station manufacturer i-charging presented its megawatt charging system (MCS) solution, called i-light, which offers a total power of up to 1.5 MW.

“With i-light, we are making a statement about the future of heavy transport,” said Pedro Moreira da Silva, CEO of i-charging.

“Our goal is to provide a solution that addresses the critical need for faster and more efficient charging, while also supporting the broader transition towards sustainable energy. i-light is an important step in this direction, and we are incredibly proud to bring this technology to market,” he added.

This i-charging solution consists of a power unit and satellites, each with a charging point.

The total power of 1.5 megawatts can be distributed between one and six satellites.

In this way, the chargers can supply between 250 kilowatts and 1.5 MW, in 250 kilowatts increments.

The company highlights that both MCS and CCS connections are possible, the solution’s efficiency is between 98 and 99%, and the satellites feature a 37-inch display.

The Power Unit acts as the power source in the system, distributing the charging current across multiple satellites through dynamic load balancing.

This makes the system similar to other charging systems with a Power Unit and narrow-profile satellites, such as those from Kempower or Ekoenergetyka.

In i-charging’s case, the satellites have dimensions of 55 x 62 centimetres and a height of 2.55 metres.

According to the manufacturer, the i-light system will be certified in 2025, once the MCS standards from ISO, IEC, and SAE are published.

The company also expects to deliver the first i-light chargers with MCS connections in 2025.

The version with CCS charging points is expected to go on sale by the end of 2024.
