SWITZERLAND. The federal government’s electric mobility roadmap will be extended and expanded until 2030

Bern, 03.09.2024 – Federal Councillor Albert Rösti wants to extend the electric mobility roadmap, which has been running successfully since 2018, until 2030. At the 13th platform event of the Roadmap Electromobility 2025 on 3 September 2024 in Bern, he held out the prospect that in addition to passenger vehicles, trucks, light commercial vehicles and public transport buses will now also be integrated. This allows synergies in vehicles and charging infrastructure to be exploited and the impact of the roadmap to be increased.

Electrification is a key to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from transport. At the event in Bern, Federal Councillor Albert Rösti paid tribute to the commitment of the Roadmap members. Since 2018, they have been making a significant contribution to the development of electric mobility in Switzerland with voluntary measures. At the same time, he called on them to continue their activities intensively. The extension of the roadmap to 2030 is intended to create the necessary stable framework for this.

To achieve Switzerland's climate targets, freight and public passenger transport on the road must also make their contribution. Therefore, in the next stage of the roadmap, buses in public transport, trucks and light vehicles are also to be integrated into the goals of the roadmap. Federal Councillor Albert Rösti invited representatives of the transport sectors to join the Roadmap for Electric Mobility and to work together with the previous stakeholders.

Roberto Cirillo, CEO of Swiss Post and host of the platform event, pointed out in his welcome address that his company is already living this breadth. The Swiss Post Group is relying heavily on electrification, from letter delivery to parcel logistics and Postbuses.

The invited representatives of companies and associations also welcomed the extension and expansion of the Roadmap for Electric Mobility. This makes synergies usable and facilitates cooperation between the various stakeholders. This is necessary as the challenges are increasingly shifting from vehicle technology and the supply on the market to the charging infrastructure. And specific charging concepts are also needed in freight and public passenger transport to ensure efficient and reliable operation in everyday life.

The federal government launched the Electric Mobility Roadmap, which is supported by the Swiss Federal Offices of Energy (SFOE) and Roads (FEDRO), in 2018 and extended it four years later until 2025. With several activities (e.g. national funding programme for charging infrastructure or development of a fast-charging network along national roads), it contributes to the goals of the Electromobility Roadmap with its own activities. The Federal Offices for the Environment (FOEN) and Transport (FOEN) are increasingly involved in the topic via the circular economy of batteries and public road traffic. In a panel discussion, the directors of the four DETEC offices confirmed their will to further advance the decarbonisation of road transport with stakeholders from business, science, cantons, cities and municipalities as well as civil society. The focus is to be on voluntary measures.

The key data and objectives of the Electric Mobility Roadmap for the period 2026 to 2030 will be developed in the coming months under the leadership of the SFOE in close dialogue with the stakeholders.
