SWEDEN. Niam continues to invest in ultra-fast charging for electric vehicles

January 17, 2024

Niam Infrastructure continues its collaboration with Nima Energy to jointly accelerate the deployment of ultra-fast charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. The collaboration has already yielded tangible results – three new charging sites with 24 charging points have been opened in southern Sweden, and a total of 150 charging points are currently under construction.

Niam Infrastructure (Niam) and Nima Energy (Nima) began a collaboration in 2022 regarding the financing of ultra-fast EV charging infrastructure. Now, the country’s electric vehicle owners can see the result of this collaboration: in December 2023, Nima opened three new charging sites with a total of 24 charging points in southern Sweden. Additionally, Nima is building 50 charging points in central Stockholm, of which 12 are planned to be completed shortly and the others by the summer. In total, Nima is currently constructing 150 ultra-fast charging points from Stockholm to Skåne.

“The focus on ultra-fast charging at strategically important locations in Sweden is crucial to accelerate the electrification of the vehicle fleet. The investment in Nima Energy gives us the opportunity to expedite the transition through the rapid expansion of ultra-fast and easily accessible electric vehicle charging that meets the drivers’ needs,” says Sverker Åkerblom, CEO of Niam Infrastructure.

Our deepened collaboration with Nima is entirely in line with our focus on sustainable infrastructure projects in the Nordic region

“It feels very good to now see the concrete result of the collaboration with our partner and co-owner Niam Infrastructure in the form of a number of opened sites. We have an ambitious goal to build a total of 1,250 charging points in the Nordic region by the end of 2026, with Sweden as the first market,” says Marcus Landelin, CEO of Nima Energy.

The collaboration between Niam and Nima began in 2022 when Niam’s infrastructure fund became a minority shareholder in Nima with the possibility to finance the expansion of Nima’s charging sites. To accelerate the rollout, Niam decided last year to inject additional capital and increased its ownership stake in Nima from 15 to just over 23 percent.

Nima develops, builds, and operates ultra-fast charging hubs along roads and in and around major cities. All of Nima’s charging points have a capacity of up to 300 or 400 kW, allowing for a charge of up to 300 km in 15 minutes.
